No Roadmap to Assess Objectionable Content on WhatsApp, Admits Government
The government on Friday virtually expressed its helplessness about assessing objectionable content uploaded on online messaging website WhatsApp since they are encrypted end-to-end and no third party can get them.
The authorities can take action when the material is reported as it's laws in place, Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad informed Congress member Raj Babbar from the Rajya Sabha in reply to some question.
The member had asked if the government has any plan to quit sharing of objectionable videos through phones and WhatsApp.
In the response, Prasad cited laws which deal with offences of publishing or transmitting objectionable contents. He confessed that cases of objectionable videos being uploaded via cellular phones and shared via WhatsApp have been detected but added that messages are end-to-end encryptedand can't be viewed by a third party.
"Instances of objectionable videos being uploaded through cellular phones and shared via WhatsApp have been noticed. In accordance with WhatsApp, the messages are end-to-end encrypted and they and any third party can't read them. To put it differently, the messages are only viewed by the sender and the recipient," he explained in the answer.
However, they also acknowledge that since they don't have the contents of their messages available together, it restricts their ability to do it. An individual may take screenshot of the content and share it with proper law enforcement authorities," he added.
"Concerned law enforcement agencies take necessary action for breach noticed or reported according to the law," he said.
There have been cases of anti inflammatory elements using WhatsApp to fan communal passions in the recent years.
