The struggle of the authorities against communities by sharing torrent files has claimed a new victim. It is “What.CD”, which in its nine-year history had managed to be considered one of the largest private trackers of the world to exchange music, one that could only be accessed by invitation.
According to the French medium Zataz, cyber crime unit has conducted a raid in twelve servers operated by the tracker in the OVH provider, and also on another server that was being maintained by the company. At first everything, it seemed a simple fall tracker but later it was confirmed that What.CD was no longer operating.
“Due to recent events, What.CD has been closed,” we read in a message posted on its website. “Not likely to return soon in our current form. All site and users data has been destroyed. So long, and thanks for all fish”.
In the last message on Twitter, those responsible for the tracker have denied that there was any raid, although Damien Bancal, Zataz journalist, has assured TorrentFreak that their sources are reliable. Hence, the investigation concluded with the raid would have lasted two years, and the group of French SACEM music industry seems to have been involved in it.
But regardless of how far is some information about the reasons, what is clear is that What.CD closed and with it one of the most important trackers of the torrent community. Of course, as we already know in the world of P2P these measures are of little use, and certainly not much happens until about 200,000 users of the tracker end up finding a replacement.
